Egyptian Professor’s Frugal Budget Sparks Heated Debate
Cairo, Egypt – November 30, 2024 – A proposed monthly budget of 3,000 Egyptian pounds (roughly $95 USD) to support a family of four has ignited controversy in Egypt. Dr. Rawda Hamza, a renowned professor of home economics at Helwan University, defended her controversial plan in a recent televised interview, sparking heated debate about the realities of living costs in the country.
Hamza, with over 12 years of experience in media appearances, insists her goal is to empower low-income families to manage their necessities. “I’m not talking to the social media audience that has the latest model phone and internet package,” she stated on the popular Egyptian talk show "Al-Hekaya." She emphasized her extensive experience, having conducted "150 television interviews," clarifying that she is not seeking "trends or fame."
The professor’s budget proposal drew sharp criticism, particularly from host Amr Adeeb, who questioned its feasibility. "You want the family to spend 100 pounds a day," Adeeb pointed out, highlighting the rising cost of basic goods. "If I go to the vegetable market to buy 50 pounds of produce, it will cost 1,500 pounds a month. And what about sweets for school lunches? 10 loaves of bread for 2 pounds plus fenugreek, does anyone know how to get a kilo of lentils today? Is this a budget product?"
Undeterred, Hamza challenged anyone to find fault with the prices she cited, asserting that she is not responsible for product pricing or proof of income. She confidently declared, “I challenge someone to tell me the price of a product that I said was wrong in my interview yesterday, but there is no agency that verifies prices or verifies revenue. I didn’t talk about services like electricity or water, and every woman knows how to make soap and detergent from leftover oil."
Hamza detailed her suggestions for stretching meat, poultry, and fish allocations, arguing that a whole piece of meat could be divided into 12 portions, chicken into 8, and pasta fish into 4. "There is no Egyptian family that eats meat every day," she added.
The debate reflected the ongoing challenges faced by many Egyptians grappling with the rising cost of living. Hamza’s proposed budget, while well-intentioned, highlighted the stark reality of economic hardships and the complexities of managing household finances in a country increasingly impacted by inflation.
