The relations between the official Church and the Presidency of the Republic, as well as the government, are in crisis, as can be seen from announcements that are interpreted as war over the recent law on same-sex marriage.
The law was supported by many government MPs as well as the President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou to whom he showed a “door” Holy Synod with her announcement, in view of the celebration of Orthodoxy Sunday.
After the announcement of the Holy Synod, which transfers the celebration from the Metropolis to the much smaller Catholic of the Holy Monastery of the Incorporeal Petrakis, the Presidency of the Republic announced that Katerina Sakellaropoulou invited the prelates to a lunch yesterday.

“The President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, sent yesterday, March 4, invitations to the President of the Permanent Holy Synod of the Church of Greece, Archbishop Hieronymos of Athens and All Greece, and the Members of the Synod, for the traditional lunch that she hosts in their honor at the Presidential Megaro, on the occasion of the Feast of Orthodoxy.
The President and the Members of the I.I.S. are always welcome at the Presidential Palace, at the same time, their decision as to whether to accept the invitation is respected.”
The announcement of the Holy Synod:
“Today, Tuesday, March 5, 2024, the Permanent Holy Synod of the Church of Greece of the 167th Synodical Period convened, under the Presidency of His Beatitude Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, Mr. Ieronymos.
The D.I.S. decided that this year’s celebration of the Sunday of Orthodoxy, during the First Sunday of Lent, March 24th, will take place in the Catholic Church of the Holy Monastery of the Incorporeal Petrakis, officiated by the Venerable Synod Metropolitans of Nicopolis and Preveza Mr. Chrysostomos, Ierissos, Mount Athos and Ardameri and Theoklitou and Maroneia and Komotini Mr. Panteleimonos. The solemn service of the day, as has already been set, will be delivered by the Most Reverend Synodal Metropolitan of Aetolia and Acarnania, Mr. Damaskinos.
