The broken car bridge in Holwerd is no longer being repaired. Until the renovation, which starts in two weeks, a special crane will help to get the cars on and off the boat.
The renovation will take place from June 19 in the night hours. In principle, travelers will not be bothered by this, Rijkswaterstaat reports. In the night of June 20 to 21, the old bridge will be replaced by a new one.
The problems with the bridge arose a week ago when about 65 cars could not get off the boat that had just sailed from Ameland to Holwerd. Travelers were stuck on the boat for hours, until a crane was on site to operate the car bridge.
Last week, a team from Rijkswaterstaat worked every night to try to solve the problem and to carry out tests. “But with every solution we came up with, a new problem arose,” says a spokesman.
This is also because the material is often dated: the installation of the bridge is also almost forty years old. “That old material doesn’t communicate well with the new, that applies to both the hardware and the software.”
That is why it has now been decided to leave the tap in place. That solution works well. There were still fears of crowds at the weekend, but that did not cause any problems: “We have arranged a traffic controller for those busy moments. That also works fine for the shipping company, Wagenborg.”
According to Rijkswaterstaat, the fact that there is now clarity is also good. “The renovation is not a day too soon. If it would take months, we would have brought it forward. We couldn’t do that now, for example because of the planning.”
