Holstein Kiel: Stadium renovation ahead of first Bundesliga home game on schedule | NDR.de – News

Status: 27.08.2024 08:09 a.m.

The Bundesliga adventure begins in Kiel on Saturday – with the home game against VfL Wolfsburg. And the Kiel team can celebrate this in their home Holstein Stadium. The DFL had set conditions for this – and has now given the green light.

Since promotion to the Bundesliga was confirmed, renovations have been going on non-stop at and in the Holstein Stadium in Kiel, as the DFL had imposed conditions for the Bundesliga: These particularly concerned the areas of stadium and media infrastructure. Holstein Kiel has been playing in the Holstein Stadium since 2017 with a special permit. The DFL has now given the go-ahead for the home start in the Bundesliga, because: What they wanted to achieve is finished, says the club.

Since 2017, there have been up to 60 spaces for radio, television and print journalists, and there should be 65 for the second Bundesliga. 112 are required for the Bundesliga. The number of parking spaces near the stadium also had to double from 90 to 180 – just as the room for the press conference now has to accommodate 80 instead of 40 journalists.

Kilometers of new cables, renovated showers, a fan tent

For all of these measures, kilometers of new cables were laid everywhere and new platforms for cameras were built. In addition, the so-called “mixed zone” for interviews was expanded and the changing rooms and showers were renovated. The club officials also had a fan tent built behind the east stand. Here, fans will have more space to get food and drinks during home games. According to a spokesperson, the final finishing touches should be completed by the Friday before the first home game at the latest.

Stadium renovation from autumn 2025

The stadium conversion from 15,000 to 25,000 seats is to be carried out gradually over the coming years while matches are still in session. The council of the state capital Kiel voted in favor of the tender in July.

After the tendering process has begun, companies can apply until the end of the year. There will then be a bidding process. A Frankfurt-based architectural firm has completed three planning models for the new stadium. Based on this template, companies from across Europe will soon be able to apply for the contract. Construction work could then start in autumn 2025 if a suitable applicant is found by the end of the year. The planned costs are 75 million euros.
