Second division soccer team Holstein Kiel wants to play in a new stadium in the foreseeable future. The arena is to be built on the ground of the old one and will offer around 25,000 seats after completion.
Kiel’s Lord Mayor Ulf Kämpfer informed about the new construction of the arena on Monday evening. The Holstein Stadium currently has 15,000 seats, but does not meet the required standards in terms of functionality and safety. Playing in the second division is currently only possible with a special permit, which must be applied for annually. However, there are no concrete plans or dates yet. “The master of the procedure is the city,” said club president Steffen Schneekloth.
North stand is first
First, the north stand is to be demolished and rebuilt. It will offer 1,750 places and inside will accommodate modern functional rooms such as changing rooms as well as the press and VIP area. The construction of this new main grandstand is planned for the 2022/23 season.
This will be followed by the south and thus the old main grandstand for 5.00 spectators. There are no timings for the west and east stands. The cost share for city and country is estimated at around 30 million euros. However, BUND and citizens’ groups have raised concerns and fear that green spaces will be destroyed.
