Holstein Kiel – Hard landing in Bundesliga reality | NDR.de – Sport

Status: 15.09.2024 10:46 a.m.

After the 1:6 debacle against FC Bayern, the newly promoted team to the Bundesliga is still waiting for its first point. Next Saturday, they will play a key match against VfL Bochum.

Who hasn’t felt that way? You’re looking forward to the party of the year – everything is prepared for a big celebration with great people and a great atmosphere. And then your best friends don’t show up, the music is bad – and all too quickly there are no decent drinks left.

That’s probably how almost all KSV Holstein Kiel fans felt on Saturday evening. Already on the third Bundesliga matchday, the big FC Bayern were guests, whom Kiel had defeated as a second division team in a legendary cup match in January 2021 – at that time in front of empty stands due to the corona pandemic. Why shouldn’t that happen again, this time in front of a stately crowd in the Holstein Stadium?

Kiel’s defender Becker: “Shitted his pants”

And then everything that could go wrong for an underdog went wrong for the underdog. After just 14 seconds, Jamal Musiala became the party crasher with his 1-0. 13 minutes later, it was already 3-0 for Bayern – own goal included – and even the slightest hope of a Kiel sensation was gone.

“It was just bad in the first few minutes,” said Kiel defender Timo Becker: “Too many players shit their pants in the first few minutes.”

Fortunately for the newly promoted team, Bayern slowed down significantly, especially in the second half, otherwise it could have been a defeat of historic proportions. “If you’re 2-0 down after eight minutes, you can be happy that it’s more or less a relatively light result of 6-1,” said Fiete Arp.

Zero points, 3:11 goals

Holstein Kiel has hit the hard ground of the Bundesliga after three match days. Zero points and a goal difference of 3:11 is the sobering interim result. The northern Germans are the fourth club in Bundesliga history after Karlsruher SC (1963), Borussia Neunkirchen (1964) and Energie Cottbus (2000) to have lost all of their first three games in the top flight of football.

However, Kiel also had a relatively difficult opening program in Hoffenheim, Wolfsburg and Bayern.

“We mustn’t put ourselves down or talk badly about ourselves,” said captain Lewis Holtby after the drubbing by Munich. But he also knows that points are the hard currency in the football business.

Match in Bochum becomes key

That’s why the match against VfL Bochum, who are also still without a point, next Saturday (3:30 p.m.) is very important for Kiel. Emotionally too, so that the euphoria after being promoted to the Bundesliga for the first time doesn’t completely disappear.

“We will continue to do everything we can to get into this league. We want to get points against teams that are on our level,” said Holtby. Arp was even clearer: “We need points in Bochum next week. We have to win there – that’s the way it is!”
