Hollywood is facing one of the most critical moments in its history. And it might seem that we exaggerate, but no. For the first time in more than 60 years, screenwriters and actors will be on strike at the same time, completely paralyzing all ongoing productions. Prepare for a fair number of delays and cancellations in the coming weeks unless unions and production companies come to an agreement soon. But taking into account that the writers’ strike (of which we reviewed here its causes and consequences) is still going on, even having started on May 2, everything indicates that expecting nothing in the short term is utopian.
SAG-AFTRA’s negotiating committee voted unanimously to recommend to the National Board a strike of the Producers-SAG-AFTRA TV/Theatrical/Streaming Contracts which expired July 12, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. PT.

The consequences of the actors’ strike
Called by the SAG (Screen Actors Guild, the Film Actors Union) and with the AFTRA also involved (American Federation of Television and Radio Artist), the strike will affect more than 160,000 industry professionals who will not be allowed to shoot series or movies or promote their respective audiovisual productions in any way. No more interviews and star parades for the different premieres and conventions like Comic-Con.
Why is there an actors’ strike?
The SAG-AFTRA has been negotiating with the AMPTP (the Alliance of Film and Television Producers) for more than a month, which is still the representative of companies such as Netflix, Warner Bros or Disney. They wanted to regulate image rights, which until now had not fully covered the streaming phenomenon, and they also wanted to address the use of artificial intelligence and issues such as the controversial and increasingly common virtual castings.
The union’s statement on these last weeks of negotiations has been quite harsh and it ensures that the AMPTP’s proposals so far have been “insulting and disrespectful.” “They have refused to negotiate in a meaningful way and on many issues they have directly blocked negotiations. Although they have implemented massive changes in the industry, they want to keep our contracts frozen. They have underestimated the determination of our members and are about to find out what that means.”
