Holidays, events, tests and the CoronaCheck app: what do you need to know?

It’s (almost) allowed again: on holiday, to events and to discotheques. But you must prove that you have been vaccinated or tested negative. How exactly will that work in the coming months? Below we explain each scenario.

I want to go on holiday within the EU

Always check the color code of the country first, advises the national government. On the website of Foreign Affairs are the rules per country that currently apply. If a country is orange, it is advised to travel only if necessary. Holidays are possible to yellow and green countries, you are asked to be alert to risks in a yellow country.

From July 1 it is EU Digital Corona Certificate (DCC) available. That is a QR code that you can upload in the CoronaCheck app. How does that work?

  • First download the CoronaCheck-app from the App Store or the Play Store.
  • Log in with your DigiD. If you have given permission for it during the vaccination, your vaccination data will be automatically collected from the RIVM, the GGD or the hospital. If that doesn’t work automatically, you can also add your vaccination certificate to the app yourself. On the website of the national government Information on how that works will be coming soon.
  • If you are not (fully) vaccinated, you can also upload a test certificate. From July 1 you can make a free test appointment for travel in July and August. If you test negative, you will receive a pick-up code with the result. You can enter that code on the CoronaCheck app.
  • Have you had corona and can you prove that with a positive PCR test? Then you can also upload a so-called recovery certificate in the CoronaCheck app. This happens automatically when you log in to the app with your DigiD. It only works if the positive test is between 12 days and 180 days old.
  • If you have the QR code in the app (or printed out), you can have it scanned when you travel. For example, before you board the plane or when you cross the border by car.

I want to go on holiday outside the EU

For travel outside the EU, different rules apply and are subject to constant change. For example, Turkey requires a vaccination certificate or a negative PCR test that is not more than 72 hours old. Another example: there is currently an entry ban for residents of Schengen countries in the United States. So check the rules per country at the travel advice from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
