Holidays and worries about new corona wave lead to more repeat shots NOW

In the past three weeks, more and more repeat shots against COVID-19 have been taken. The summer holidays and the concerns about the increase in the number of corona infections contribute to that increase, RIVM tells NU.nl.

In the first week of July, more than twice as many repeat shots were taken as a month earlier. There was a strong increase, especially among people in their sixties.

People do not have to say why they want a new injection, but RIVM does have a general impression. “Of course, people have different reasons for being vaccinated, but the summer holidays and feeling vulnerable in this wave logically play a role in this,” says a spokesperson.

The repeat shot is a second booster for people over 60, residents of nursing homes and people with vulnerable health. They can receive this from three months after their last booster shot or corona infection. Up to and including Sunday 10 July, more than 2.3 million repeat shots have been taken. Just under half of the over-sixties have had a repeat shot.

Also more basic shots and boosters

People under the age of sixty can still get their basic vaccination and booster if they have not already had it. This also happened more often as the summer holidays approached. In the first week of July, for example, almost twice as many booster shots were taken as in the first week of June. The strongest increase was seen among young people between the ages of 12 and 25.

Healthy people under the age of sixty cannot yet receive a second booster shot. The RIVM and the GGDs have started the preparations on a new round of vaccinations after the summer. “Our approach is now dominated by preparation. So that people can get their shot as quickly as possible if they want it and are eligible for it,” says the spokesperson.

He emphasizes that the current corona situation cannot be compared at all with that of, for example, last year around this time. “Then it was a real crisis, that is not the case now. We know much better what to expect.”
