Holiday in our own country popular, flying on its return

The most popular domestic travel destinations are Limburg, Gelderland, Drenthe, and Zeeland. Distant destinations are less popular. After the Netherlands, Germany is the most popular holiday destination, followed by France, Spain and Belgium. Nearly one in four vacationers plans to go camping at least once. Small-scale campsites are especially popular, reports the ANWB.

About 8 in 10 Dutch people plan to go on holiday this year. Not surprisingly, the enthusiasm for this is greatest among young people (92 percent) and lowest among the elderly (72 percent).

Corona also plays an important role in making a decision about the travel destination this year. For this, the Dutch look at the local corona measures, the number of infections in the intended holiday country and the possibility to cancel or reschedule a trip. Furthermore, holidaymakers are always looking for good deals, the ANWB reports.

Interrailing on the rise

At 17 percent, the sustainable train is clearly emerging as a travel method. A few years ago, that percentage was only 2.5 percent. Flying (40 percent) has been less popular among holidaymakers since the corona pandemic. In 2019, the plane was still the most chosen mode of transport, now it is the car (64 percent).
