The Hofplein Youth Theater in Rotterdam has won the first ELJA Foundation Award 2023 today. The new art and culture prize was awarded this afternoon in the DeLaMar Theater in Amsterdam.

The ELJA Foundation Award is intended for leading cultural organizations and individuals in the field of music, dance and visual arts for children and young people.

The Rotterdam youth theater wins an amount of 75,000 euros with this prize. The other nominees were the Aslan Music Center from Amsterdam and the Hiphophuis from Rotterdam. They each win an amount of 12,500 euros.

The Hofplein Youth Theater has existed since 1985 and has various school programs and performances in its own theater in the center of Rotterdam. The theater attracts 70,000 visitors every year.

“Empowerment machine”

The jury, which includes Eurovision Song Contest jury member Cornald Maas, calls the Hofplein Youth Theater in the jury report an “empowerment machine where participants discover something that they will carry with them all their lives and that builds self-confidence.”

The ELJA Foundation philanthropic fund was founded in 2021 by Els Blokker-Verwer. She is the widow of Jaap Blokker, he was the owner of the store chain of the same name. The oeuvre prize is awarded every two years.

According to Blokker-Verwer, the three nominees each excel in their own way in developing the talents of children and young people. “Each and every one of them are shining examples for society as a whole,” she says. “I see this award as recognition for their many years of dedication.”
