The law gives the government freedom: should the presidential election be held early so as not to catch a wave of infections?
It was December 4th, 2016: Alexander Van der Bellen moved into Vienna’s Sofiensäle to the sound of “We Are the Champions”. Crowded together, his supporters celebrated the election victory of their favourite. Because it was a time when poorly sticking voting card variants were the bigger problem than virus variants.
However, if you have to elect a Federal President again in late autumn this year, Corona could become a problem. A new wave of infections would make it difficult for voters to go to the polls. An early election, for example in September, could help. But would that even work?
