Hoekstra willing to position in cabinet as party leader Omtzigt | NOW

If Pieter Omtzigt wins the CDA party leader election, Wopke Hoekstra is prepared to enter the cabinet as minister or prime minister. Hoekstra says that on Sunday The Telegraph.

“Pieter Omtzigt now explicitly appeals to me, and I am of course willing to help him,” Hoekstra told the newspaper.

Omtzigt said earlier that it has no ambition to enter the cabinet itself, but would like to see Hoekstra in this position. Fellow candidate Hugo de Jonge has indicated that he wants to enter the cabinet himself.

Hoekstra therefore responds to Omtzigt’s call, but emphasizes that he does not express his support for Omtzigt. “If Hugo de Jonge asked me something similar, I would give the same answer,” Hoekstra tells The Telegraph. “I have always said that I will soon be behind the party leader, whoever it will be. I have worked well with both of them in recent years.”

Contest for CDA party leader decided in second ballot

From the first round of the party leader election came Saturday not yet a final winner. To win, more than 50 percent of the votes must be obtained. Almost 49 percent of the voters cast their vote for De Jonge. Omtzigt received almost 40 percent of the vote. Mona Keijzer received 11.1 percent of the vote and dropped out.

The second round of voting must show who will be the final party leader for the CDA. Members of the party are allowed to vote until Tuesday morning, when the result will be announced on Wednesday.
