Hodgkin’s Lymphoma: Symptoms, Risk Factors, and Treatment Options in Indonesia

VIVA Lifestyle – Cancer is the main cause of death worldwide. There were nearly 10 million deaths in 2020, or almost 1 in 6 deaths. In 2020, the most common cancer cases were breast cancer (2.26 million), lung (2.21 million), colon and rectum (1.93 million), prostate (1.41 million), skin /non-melanoma (1.2 million), and stomach cancer (1.09 million).

Chairman of the Greater Jakarta branch of the Indonesian Oncology Association (POI Jaya), Prof. Dr. Dr. Dr. Ikhwan Rinaldi, Sp.PD-KHOM, M.Epid, M.Pd.Ked, FINASIM, FACP, said that cancer is a health problem with high urgency. Scroll for more information.

Globally, cancer is the second leading cause of death, with nearly 10 million people dying every year. According to Prof. Ikhwan, of the many cancers, Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a cancer with a low diagnosis.

“Hodgkin’s Lymphoma type lymph node cancer is a cancer whose diagnosis rate is still low. The disease exists, but unfortunately, in many cases, it is only diagnosed after it is in an advanced stage,” said Prof Ikhwan at the event World Cancer Day: Hope, Faith, Lovein the context of World Cancer Day, which was held recently.

Hodgkin’s lymphoma (LH) is a type of cancer that originates from white blood cells called lymphocytes. Lymphocytes are a component of the lymphatic system which is part of the immune system. According to 2020 Globocan data, in Indonesia there were 1,188 new cases of Hodgkin’s lymphoma with 363 deaths.

Director of Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases, Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, Dr. Eva Susanti, S.Kp., M.Kes., added that cancer found at an early stage through early detection and treated appropriately will provide a 90 percent chance of cure.

“Moreover, currently treatment for Hodgkin’s lymphoma is available and is included in BPJS Health. For this reason, the public should not hesitate to immediately carry out early detection,” continued Dr. Eva.

There are a number of risk factors that increase a person’s risk of developing Hodgkin’s lymphoma, including:

1. Epstein-Barr virus infection.
1 in 1,000 people infected with the Epstein-Barr virus are at risk of developing Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

2. Immune system.
The risk increases in people infected with HIV (the virus that causes AIDS), people taking immune system-suppressing drugs, and people with autoimmune diseases.

3. Family history.
Brothers and sisters with this disease have a higher risk of developing LH. This risk is particularly high for identical twins of an LH patient.

4. Gender.
Hodgkin’s lymphoma cases are more common in men than women.

5. Age.
Hodgkin’s lymphoma generally occurs at the age of 15-30 years and over the age of 55 years.

Furthermore, Prof. Ikhwan explained that the symptoms of Hodgkin’s lymphoma cancer that need to be watched out for are lumps or enlargement of the lymph nodes in the neck, under the armpits or groin.

“Apart from that, there are general symptoms called ‘B symptoms’ or systemic symptoms such as fever of more than 38 degrees Celsius without a clear cause, excessive sweating at night, weight loss of more than 10 percent in 6 consecutive months,” he said. .

“For this reason, immediately consult a doctor if you feel you have these symptoms. Even though Hodgkin’s lymphoma cancer has a high cure rate, there is still a chance of recurrence of around 10-30 percent. So, the earlier Hodgkin’s lymphoma can be detected, the sooner it can be detected. “treated, and the more targeted the treatment given,” explained Prof. Brotherhood.

In general, the life expectancy of Hodgkin’s lymphoma patients within 5 years after diagnosis is 89 percent. Complications of lymphoma can include the spread of cancer to other organs, decreased organ function, bone marrow damage, infection, treatment side effects, and mental or emotional health problems.

In some cases, lymphoma can be aggressive and difficult to treat, leading to a poorer prognosis. Unfortunately, most cases of Hodgkin’s lymphoma are only diagnosed at an advanced stage.

Based on management from the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), several types of Hodgkin Lymphoma treatment include chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy and targeted therapy, which targets proteins in cancer cells that control the growth of cancer cells, without affecting other normal cells.

Head of Patient Value Access PT. Takeda Indonesia, Shinta Caroline, is grateful for the opportunity to collaborate provided by POI Jaya in increasing awareness about the symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

“We are aware of the burden this disease causes. Therefore, Takeda is committed to strengthening cooperation with related parties, including POI and the Indonesian Ministry of Health, in ensuring access to our medicines and vaccines is available for patients in Indonesia, including for lymphoma “Hodgkin’s innovative treatment is now available on JKN,” he said.

“Through today’s health talk show, we also hope to encourage early detection among the public and give patients hope for a better quality life,” added Shinta.
