Hockstein: Israel and Lebanon’s commitment to Resolution 1701 is not enough

After a long and violent night in Lebanon, where Israeli strikes affected a wide range of southern Lebanese regions, the southern suburbs of Beirut, and the Bekaa, targeting Hezbollah‘s Al-Qard Al-Hassan Base with its all branches, American ambassador Amos. Hockstein arrived today, Monday, in the Lebanese capital.

In a press conference held today, Monday, in the capital of Lebanon, Beirut, Hockstein explained that no one was able to contain the conflict in Lebanon because things got out of control , expressing deep sadness about what the Lebanese people are suffering.

He said that Lebanon’s future connection to any conflict in the region is not in Lebanon’s interest, stressing that no one has done anything to implement Resolution 1701.

He also explained that he was debating in Beirut putting Lebanon on a new path of stability, as he had a constructive dialogue with the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament.

He believed that the world would stand with the Lebanese government if it made decisions that served the good of the people, because it must put the needs of its people first, especially since America is ready to support it .

Regarding the American position that wanted to change Resolution 1701, the Washington ambassador said that the United States wants to end the conflict in Lebanon as soon as possible, indicating that it is working with Lebanon and Israel to end put on the conflict forever.

Hockstein reiterated everyone’s commitment to resolving the conflict in Lebanon in accordance with Resolution 1701, especially as the Biden administration looks forward to ensuring that this is the last conflict in Lebanon for generations to come.

He also believed that a solution was possible in Lebanon, but it was rejected and things got out of control, as he put it.

He pointed out that the international community is committed to supporting the Lebanese army to achieve peace and stop hostilities, especially since it is able to protect Lebanon and all its resources.

He announced that he would not be involved in negotiations on changing Resolution 1701 regarding Lebanon, even if, according to him, the commitment of Israel and Lebanon to it is not enough.

Before Hochstein visited him with a statement that showed America’s desire to change UN Resolution 1701.

However, the Speaker of the Parliament Nabih Berri, for his part, confirmed in an interview with Al Arabiya / Al Hadath yesterday afternoon that he refuses to make any changes to the UN resolution announced, which orders the use of army South Lebanon and stop. hostilities, as well as strengthening the use of the United Nations peacekeeping force UNIFIL.

Berri, who received permission from Hezbollah to follow the path of the ongoing movement for a ceasefire with Israel, also believed that America now has a last chance for a diplomatic solution.

As for the conflicts between Israel and Hezbollah, they continue to intensify, after breaking out a year ago when the party started firing rockets to support Hamas in the Gaza Strip, in the what they called the “front support.”

While at the beginning of this October, Israel launched a ground operation inside Lebanon’s borders in an attack it said was aimed at returning the settlers expelled from the northern regions as as a result of the missile attacks.

While the United States and regional powers spent a year trying to reach a ceasefire in Gaza without results, many Lebanese officials and Western diplomats were skeptical about the chances of reaching a ceasefire in Lebanon too.
