India started with a win against Spain in the Hockey World Cup in Odisha. India won the match by two one-sided goals in the newly built Birsa Munda Stadium in Rourkala. Amit Rohidas (12th minute) and Hardik Singh (26th minute) scored for India. Rohidas’ goal in the match was also India’s 200th goal in the World Cup. Malayalam player Sreejesh did not score a goal for India.
In other matches, England beat Wales by five goals to one side, Australia beat France by eight goals to one side and Argentina beat South Africa by one goal to one side. Jeremy Hayward and Tom Craig scored hat-tricks for the Aussies against France.
