Prague’s Sparta has been showing high activity on the transfer market in recent days. The Finnish striker Jani Lajunen is also moving to the Czech capital, the club announced this via its website.

“Jani is a very high-quality center who went through great hockey seasons. In addition, the type of player we were missing in the team. A player who knows how to win,” notes the head of the sports department, Tomáš Divíšek.

The 32-year-old Lajunen will try to help Sparta create a winning mentality: he has two Finnish titles with Tappara Tampere, and he reached the top in Sweden as a Växjo player.

“Jani is a very quality center who has gone through great hockey seasons.”

In addition, in 2011 he helped the Finnish national team win the gold medal at the World Championship, and five years later he took part in the silver. And, among other things, he also presented himself at the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang.

“We got a look at him at the Spengler Cup in December, and we’ve been in contact since then. Jani showed a great interest in playing for Sparta, it was a very quick agreement,” says sports manager Jaroslav Hlinka.

After prestigious engagements in Sweden, Finland or Switzerland, Lajunen will land in Sparta. For the past two seasons, he played the role of leader in Örebro, where he held the position of assistant captain.

His contribution lies in several aspects: with his body proportions (189 cm and 92 kg), he is known for a tough physical game, but at the same time he maintains a solid productivity – breaking the 20 Canadian points mark every year.

“He showed great interest in playing for Sparta, it was a very quick arrangement.”

He will join other foreigners Aaron Irving and Erik Thorell on the Prague roster. The club announced several arrivals after the new management took over: in addition to Irving, Vojtěch Mozík and Filip Chlapík also strengthened it.
