And so a nervous Huussen drove two months ago with his parents and girlfriend to The Hague for his first training. “It felt a bit like the first day of school”, laughs Huussen. “From the parking lot I also had to continue on my own because my parents and girlfriend were not allowed to come and I didn’t know anyone there.”
“Due to the nerves and the new environment, I was not very satisfied with the first training sessions”, Huussen is honest. “But soon things got better and the pressure fell off my shoulders.”
Final selection
Head coach Omar Schlingemann was impressed and allowed Huussen to participate in a few games in the preparation, to include him in the final selection. Schlingemann sees opportunities in the attacker to grow into a basic player.
“I was really taken by surprise”, said Huussen. “And of course I was very happy. Because of joy I even forgot to ask things. For example, how the clothes are going. The day after I called the coach again to ask, haha.”
Klein Zwitserland starts the competition on September 6 with an away match at Kampong.
