Hockey Match between Södertälje and Djurgården Interrupted by Pyrotechnics: Consequences and Game Highlights

A well-filled Scaniarinken had loaded up for a hockey party between Södertälje and Djurgården.

But the party took off immediately. Even before it even started.

The players wandered out into the dressing rooms. From the stands, pyrotechnics could be seen flashing – which caused the match to be interrupted.

– I am saddened. I’m sorry, really. I think that a hockey match like this between two good hockey teams that are good at racing should be covered by what happens on the ice. Now here we are again, I don’t know for what time in the order. People pay to be there and see their team and then we have this crap again, said Fredrik Söderström in TV4’s studio.

The warning before the match: “Parting of the ways”

Before tonight’s match, Södertälje’s club director Robert Andersson issued a warning in an interview with The county newspaper.

This after the last time the teams met in Scaniarink on 24 November. Then the entire arena had to be evacuated after pyrotechnics from the stands.

– We are coming to a crossroads now, he told the newspaper.

– Not allowing away fans was something that was discussed for a long time to reduce the risk of fights. In the discussions, we have been in a situation where we felt that we cannot have away supporters and were close to sending in a waiver not to have it, to wanting to do everything we can to make it work, said Robert Andersson at the time.

“A big concern right now”

During Friday, the same thing happened again.

In TV4’s studio, Fredrik Söderström said that he lacks communication and that it is too quiet from the league – the hockey Allsvenskan.

– I want to know, what will be the consequences when you do this? Figure out a way to take this further, because this is getting unsustainable. This degrades the sport of hockey, the experience on site or watching on TV, said Söderström.

There is a possibility that third-placed Södertälje and fourth-placed Djurgården will meet each other in a playoff. Something that will mean that the team’s supporters meet again.

– The probability is quite high that these are teams that run at each other in a playoff. Where the games are played close, it’s every other day, it can be long games in extra time as well. This is a dilemma and a big concern right now that above all the hockey Allsvenskan has.

Two goals in 36 seconds

After about ten minutes, the match could be resumed – without the crowd needing to evacuate the Scaniarink. The first period ended goalless.

The second period would be all the hotter. And that in just 36 seconds.

6:33 into the period, Djurgården’s Olle Liss scored his fourteenth goal of the season.

Just 36 seconds later, Södertälje answered.

Miikka Pitkänen, who was recruited by Södertälje under the winter window, pricks in kvitteringen and crosses behind goalkeeper Viktor André.

Krupic eller Harlest?

6:37 into the third period, the guests’ Linus Klasen was sent off. It was costly – because in the power play Amil Krupic scored 2-1 for Södertälje.

Whether Krupic was last on the puck, however, is not certain.

– Hampus (Harlestam) came forward and said the puck touched him. It felt like it was me who scored the goal in any case, says Krupic to TV4.

Despite massive forcing in the final minutes, Djurgården could not find an equaliser.

Södertälje finally won the summit with 2–1 and thus advances to second place in the table. Djurgården is fifth with five rounds remaining in the regular season.
