For several months, the German Hockenheim was mentioned as one of the circuits that can host one of the Formula 1 stages in 2020. However, today the official representatives of the autodrome said that it was decided to completely abandon the idea of holding the race due to financial difficulties and restrictions associated with the coronavirus.
“From the very beginning of the negotiations, we have openly indicated our position,” said the official to represent the German autodrome. – In other words, we have always emphasized, and found in this full understanding on the part of Formula 1, that we will be able to organize the race only if it does not lead to financial losses in comparison with the normal operation of the track.
We have already lost millions of euros due to the coronavirus crisis and could not afford more as we are accountable to the company, employees and shareholders. At the same time, we made it clear that we intend to strictly comply with all restrictions introduced in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg, which at the moment do not allow holding events with spectators.
Over the past weeks, we have shown flexibility, but the requirements for the race in Germany turned out to be unfeasible, and in a sense they were influenced by the competition. In the end, our own business and a stable exit from the crisis are more important for us. “
