Albany After the sexual harassment scandal by New York’s resigning governor Andrew Cuomo, his successor Kathy Hochul is now in charge of the state’s official business. On (this) Tuesday (local time), the 62-year-old was the first woman to take over the political leadership of the important region with almost 20 million inhabitants and the US east coast metropolis of the same name.

Hochul represents the more conservative wing of the Democrats in New York and has served as deputy to Cuomo, who was in his third term, since 2015. She had promised more transparency and a better working atmosphere in the highest circles of government than in the days of her predecessor.

For two of the senior consultant positions, she chose two high-profile women, Karen Persichilli Keogh and Elizabeth Fine. According to Hochul, he plans to run for a full term in 2022.

The mood around Cuomo was described in one report as “hostile” to women and a “climate of fear.” Cuomo resigned two weeks ago after ten years in office – after an official investigation had accused him of sexually harassing several women. US President Joe Biden then called for his resignation.

In a farewell address on Monday, the fallen democratic hopeful described the scandal as “not fair”. There were “moments of intense political pressure and media hype” that led to a quick verdict. Despite the statements of many women, Cuomo apparently does not see guilt in himself: “Allegations still have to be checked and confirmed, whether by a woman or a man,” he said.
