Gov. Kathy Hochul is cruising to a commanding victory in next week’s Democratic primary, while the Republican race between Rep. Lee Zeldin and Andrew Giuliani is close to a tie, according to a new poll.
But whether Zeldin or Giuliani win the Republican primary next Tuesday, the same SurveyUSA poll shows Democrat Hochul with a commanding general election lead of more than 20 points against either.
Among 1,002 likely Democratic primary voters, Hochul gets 54% support, compared to 18% for Rep. Tom Suozzi and 11% for New York City Public Defender Jumaane Williams. (Another 17% remain undecided.) That huge gap is in line with virtually every poll in the race for months.
Among 538 likely Republican voters, Zeldin gets 25% support, compared to Giuliani’s 23%, Harry Wilson’s 13% and Rob Astorino’s 8%. But nearly a third of Republican voters said they were still undecided, suggesting the race remains open.
Geographically, Giuliani has a commanding advantage in New York City and the Hudson Valley, while Zeldin does well upstate.
But either way, the poll showed a significant challenge for any Republican in the fall.
DEMOCRAT | REPUBLICAN | MARGIN |
Kathy Hochul | Lee Zeldin | Hochul +24 |
Kathy Hochul | Andrew Giuliani | Hochul +26 |
Kathy Hochul | Harry Wilson | Hochul +25 |
Kathy Hochul | Rob Astorino | Hochul +27 |
The online poll for WHEC in Rochester and WNYT in Albany was conducted June 15-20 and surveyed 3,500 adults, of whom 2,987 were registered voters. The credibility interval, akin to a margin of error, was 3.5 percentage points for the Democratic primaries, 5.4 percentage points for the Republican primaries, and about 2.7 percentage points for the general election matchups.
NBC 4 New York/WNBC, Telemundo 47/WNJU and Times Union featured the televised debate featuring the leading Democratic Party candidates for Governor of New York.
