NEW YORK – Gov. Kathy Hochul on Wednesday signed into law new legislation that creates a new path for people 18 and older to apply for “day designation,” allowing them to perform a single wedding on a specific day in the state. York.
“Bringing people together in marriage is a beautiful moment that should be shared with an officiant selected by the soon-to-be-weds,” Governor Hochul said. “By translating this legislation into law, we are removing any barriers to becoming officiants so that friends and family can share such a meaningful moment with loved ones of their choice and have their marriage recognized under New York State law.” .
The legislation (S.739A/A.6300A) amends the Family Relations Act to allow individuals to request permission to be designated officiants at the marriage of a particular couple.
