NEW YORK – A plan to replace the controversial congestion tax, which was canceled shortly before it came into force on June 30, will end very soon, after the elections, according to an article in the media politics.
According to a statement, the Gov. Kathy Hochul told Politico from the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Monday that she will announce a congestion pricing bill in place in late 2024 or early 2025, when she gets the legislature on board.
The Democrat surprised everyone in June, with an indefinite suspension of the controversial tax, which would cost $15 for cars to enter Manhattan, below 60th Street, and about $30 for trucks.
Since then, they have received a lot of criticism from business leaders, and Democrats who supported the plan and an avalanche of protests for and against it. However, the governor has been convinced that it was necessary, due to the economic burden it would place on New Yorkers.
Meanwhile, in New York, two new lawsuits were filed against Hochul and the Department of Transportation, MTA, by groups such as Riders Alliance, Sierra Club and others. These claim that there was an environmental impact, which will cause the plan to be banned and that they are breaking the law.
In addition, there are 11 other separate lawsuits, asking them to eliminate this additional charge for drivers and ensure that this fee would, on the other hand, lead to more traffic on the George Washington Bridge .
The congestion charge would generate $15 billion for the MTA to improve signs, elevators and ramps for at least 18 subway stations and buy about 250 electric buses. However, Hochul insists that public transport can be financed by other means.
