Krefeld / Mönchengladbach. There has probably never been such a calm start to the winter semester: At the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences, a new phase of life has begun for 2,980 first-year students. Most of the introductory events took place in small groups on campus over the past 14 days. However, there was no central opening event. Instead there was a video message from President Dr. Thomas Grünewald, where he warmly welcomed the students.
“We would like to be a close companion especially in this difficult time for students and have done everything in the past few weeks to enable you to study smoothly in the winter semester,” said Grünewald. The aim of the hybrid semester is to offer students in the first semester in particular courses in face-to-face form. Most of the teaching takes place digitally.
The majority of the 2980 first-year students start their bachelor’s degree (2510). So far, around 410 young people have enrolled in the master’s courses, although this number is still provisional. Enrollment is still ongoing in the Master’s area, and in the end the number will be around 470. In Krefeld there are a total of 1230 new students this year, in Mönchengladbach 1750.
The course with the highest number of enrollments (235) is the Bachelor’s degree in Social Work at the Department of Social Affairs in Mönchengladbach. In second place is the Health Care Management course at the Health Care Department in Krefeld with 191 new students. In third place, there is also strong demand for the business administration course at the Faculty of Economics in Mönchengladbach with 163 beginners.
The new Bachelor’s degree in “Cyber Security Management” has started extremely successfully with 140 new students. In the engineering field, on the other hand, the number of beginners has decreased. Above all, bachelor’s degree programs in mechanical engineering and process engineering as well as industrial engineering are below the level of previous years with enrollments.
