“Hochfeld Quartier: A New Large-Scale Meeting Zone for More Safety and Quality of Life”

The project covers the area between Länggassstrasse, Mittelstrasse/Vereinsweg, Neubrückstrasse and Hochfeldstrasse/Beaulieustrasse. There are already meeting zones in some parts of the quarter. These are now connected to form a single, large-scale meeting zone.

Implementation thanks to compromise

Only in the area of ​​Mittelstrasse between Brückfeldstrasse and Neubrückstrasse will there be no extension of the existing meeting zone. With this compromise, the city was able to end a complaints procedure by mutual agreement and thus pave the way for the implementation of the large-scale meeting zone.

The signaling and marking work required for implementation will be coordinated by ewb with the expansion of the district heating network and will start on Monday, May 1st, weather permitting. Individual parking spaces must be temporarily closed with no-stopping signs, but the streets remain passable at all times. Structural measures in the street space will be avoided.

More security and quality of life

The aim of the large meeting zone in Hochfeld is to increase traffic and school route safety. Free crossing with pedestrian priority is possible everywhere. The speed is reduced to 20 km/h. The streets within the meeting zone should no longer only serve as pure traffic axes, but should also be available for other uses.

The large-scale meeting zone goes back to a political initiative from the city council and an application from the Länggasse Engehalbinsel neighborhood commission (QLE). In autumn 2020, the municipal council approved a loan of CHF 296,000 for planning and implementation.

With the implementation in Hochfeld, there will soon be seven large meeting zones in the city of Bern. In addition to the existing ones in the northern district, Burgfeld, Breitfeld and Obstberg, large-scale meeting zones will also be realized in Weissenstein and Marzili this spring. There are also more than 150 existing small meeting zones. The public is still very interested in this type of traffic calming. Many applications are currently pending.
