NASA’s Mars robot Perseverance has been on Twitter since February 2020. As you can read on the Twitter biography, the robot started on June 30, 2020 and more than six months later it successfully landed on Mars on February 18, 2021. According to the biography, the hobbies of the Mars rover include photography, collecting stones and driving on the site. The Twitter account of the Perseverance Mars robot now has 2.8 million followers (as of December 13, 2021). These German companies contributed to the Mars rover
In addition to the Americans themselves, the Europeans, including the Germans, contributed something to the rover of the US space agency on Twitter, namely important technology. “BILD” reports which German companies have contributed to the construction of the Mars robot. According to this, the aviation company Airbus has produced both the meteorological station MEDA and the ultra-modern antenna system of the rover. MEDA is responsible for providing the mission scientists with important weather data from Mars, including, for example, wind speed and direction, humidity, atmospheric pressure, ground and air temperatures, solar radiation and the properties of airborne dust. The Leibniz Institute for Photonic Technologies in Jena provided the thermal sensors for MEDA. The radio antenna system of the European aviation giant is responsible for the high-speed communication link to earth. The JENOPTIK company also developed some of the state-of-the-art cameras that were installed on the Mars robot.
NASA rover makes great discovery
The Mars robot has recently made a scientific breakthrough. The Frankfurter Allgemeine reports, citing a study by NASA published in the journal Science, that the rover and its images managed to answer one of the biggest questions about Mars. “This is the key observation that confirms once and for all that there was a lake and a river delta at the Jezero crater,” says scientist Nicolas Mangold and lead author of the study. According to experts, the Jezero crater is said to have been a lake 3.7 billion years ago into which a small river flowed. In addition, the images of the crater are said to show that the lake once suffered from raging floods. The floods are said to have flooded large stones along the river into the lake, where they remain to this day. It is also planned that the rover will drive to the former river delta to pursue its “hobby” there and take soil samples. According to experts, traces of previous life in the water could also be hidden in the sediments. A future mission is to send the soil samples collected by the rover back to Earth.
