Myrthe and her husband Job buy an old neighborhood supermarket in 2019, which they transform into a home. The house is completely finished downstairs, but upstairs it is a total ruin. Myrthe wants nothing more than to have children. According to Job, this is fine: if she gets pregnant, he can finish the top floor in those nine months. However, Myrthe has little faith in this. “Downstairs also lasted two and a half years. Upstairs is a tougher job for him than downstairs. I don’t want to assume in those nine months that this will become something.”
When John takes Job home a little later, the awkward moment arises. Job looks at the subject of family expansion differently than Myrthe. “When you start having kids, your childhood is really done,” he says, “and I’m just not home much.” When Myrthe asks him if he will be home more often next year or the year after, he responds in the negative. “I don’t understand this, because he has never said that before,” she says irritated.
John decides to give the couple time to discuss this. Together they decide to continue with the job project, although Job’s enthusiasm is hard to find. He contributes little to the job and it doesn’t go very well. John raises the matter and asks again about the child’s wish. “If she’s happy, then I’m happy too,” is the answer. The presenter does not stop there.
“You don’t bring any energy, while Myrthe is jumping and looking forward to it,” says John. Only then does Job dare to admit that he is not yet ready for children. “I think if I’m in control of it all, I’ll never be ready. I’d love to, but I wasn’t prepared for her to want it so badly.”
John decides to involve Myrthe in the conversation and Job takes the plunge. “We’ve been going on Saturday for two years and I like not having to do anything on Saturday. That’s why it wasn’t all in a hurry for me, because I’m not ready for it yet either,” says Job referring to his girlfriend’s desire to have children.
His words hit Myrthe hard, but she is glad that he is finally honest. The two then decide to continue with the odd jobs in good spirits and not without results: at the end of the episode it can be seen that the top floor looks beautiful.
