HMI Masses Demonstration in Front of the Palace Bringing Gasoline-No Notification

Jakarta

Police declare mass demonstration Indonesian Student Association (HMI) in front of the State Palace, Central Jakarta, there was no notification. This demo ends arrest 3 people HMI cadres by the police.

“The HMI mass held a demonstration in front of the palace without any notification, this is a violation,” said Head of Criminal Investigation Unit of the Central Jakarta Metro Police AKBP Wisnu Wardana when contacted by reporters, Friday (22/4/2022).

Wisnu said there were about 20 HMI cadres who demonstrated in front of the palace, Friday (22/4) this afternoon. The HMI mass demonstrated against the arrest of one of its cadres, Muhammad Fikry, who is now being charged with a robbery case in Bekasi Regency.

Wisnu explained, in accordance with the provisions of Law Number 9 of 1998 concerning Freedom of Expression of Opinions in Public, demonstrations may not be held at vital national objects, of which the palace is one of them.

“Then, the masses also brought gasoline and tires, the gasoline has been poured on the tires,” he said.

The police then appealed to the crowd to disperse. However, it is said that the HMI masses did not heed the officers’ advice.

“When he was asked to disperse, he did not obey and instead fought the officers,” he said.

Then the police arrested 3 HMI cadres. The three are currently still being questioned at the Central Jakarta Metro Police.

Wisnu then spoke about the importance of giving notice of action to the police, at least D-3 before holding a demonstration.

“Because so far many elements have expressed their opinions in public without notification, finally anarchic activities have occurred because it is not clear who the leader is, where the crowd is from, where the location is, because there was no notification to the police,” he explained.

“Because the notification actually functions so that the police can provide security services, prepare the number of troops and so on,” he continued.
