Swedish fashion chain H&M has been fined 35.3 million euros in Germany for keeping private data of employees on a large scale.

The fine was imposed by the data protection commissioner of the German state of Hamburg. Hundreds of employees of a call center in Nuremberg were the victims.

The call center management has been collecting data from employees’ privacy since 2004. These included medical diagnoses, family problems and religious beliefs.

The data was not only collected but also stored and updated digitally. Dozens of managers were able to access the data, the data protection commissioner said.

H&M now says that those practices are inconsistent with its own policy. The employees were apologized.
