HKU Faculty of Medicine team develops TH nanoparticles to effectively treat obesity

The research team of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong has developed a nanoparticle loaded with thyroxine (Thyroid hormone, TH), which can be selectively delivered to adipose tissue, which can treat obesity and complications more effectively.
The research team stated that TH is a very old hormone that can promote energy consumption and has potential for the treatment of obesity and its complications. However, systemic injection of TH can cause a variety of serious side effects, including rapid heartbeat, heart disease, muscle atrophy and bone mass loose disease.
The team developed TH-loaded nanoparticles, which can selectively deliver TH to adipose tissue, convert bad fat into good fat, generate heat energy, promote metabolism, and thus consume energy. The study also found that the targeted delivery of TH to fat, Can alleviate hypercholesterolemia and atherosclerosis, reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and ischemic stroke.
The research results have been published in the journal Nature Communications.
