“It wouldn’t make sense later. I take responsibility,” says the president of the club from Zemplín, which ranks 4th in the hockey extra league table.
It was a move that was met with displeasure from the players’ cabin. Although she stood up for Petr Kúdelka, he is no longer the coach of HK Dukla hockey players Ingem Michalovce. Currently, the 4th team of the Tipos extraliga announced the termination of cooperation with Kúdelko and also announced the name of his successor.
Tomek Valtonen, a 44-year-old Finn with Polish roots, became the new coach of the Zemplín team. He already worked in the club in the recent past, he spent the last two seasons on the bench of the Italian participant of the international ICEHL HC Pustertal.

A different performance than they expected
“We have the feeling, after unsuccessful matches, especially with Nový Zámky and Humenný, that the performance of the game is different than we expected,” Marek Michajlo, the president of the Michalov club, explained to RTVS the reason for the coaching change.
The fact that the team under his leadership pulled a string of 12 victories in a row in November and December did not help Kúdelka to stay in his position. If it could manage the last two matches in the calendar year 2023 against Spišská Nová Ves, it would reach the top of the table. Until the end of the regular season, Michalovce has 11 more meetings. They will next appear on Wednesday in the home playoff against Košice.
“It wouldn’t make sense later. We decided at twelve o’clock. I take responsibility,” stated Michajlo.
Kúdelka is pleased with the feedback from the players
The appeal of the former coach of Michaloviec was already frozen. He stands behind the work done and claims that he will not remember Michalovce in a bad way.
“I look forward to the feedback I get from all my clients. From players who played in the NHL, KHL or are long-term players of the Slovak extra league, as well as from young players. I will not remember Michalovce bitterly. On the contrary,” Kúdelka told RTVS.
He also thanked the fans and told them to continue to support the club. His resignation caused sharp reactions among supporters. Dissatisfied expressions abounded on social networks, the fan club even before confirming this move announced a possible boycott.
“Not all fans like it. I understand this. We will evaluate this change after the season,” Michael said. At the same time, he expressed the hope that with Staron’s coach on the bench, they will achieve even more in the current season than winning bronze medals, which the people of Michalov enjoyed under Valtonen’s leadership in the 2020/21 season.
