Steinman’s face was not generally known, as he was more of an author and producer in the background. He collaborated on the hits of more famous colleagues, was nominated for a Grammy Award four times and once won with the album Falling Into You, sung by Celine Dion.

He started as a composer at the theater and is the author of the rock musical The Dream Engine. He also met the young singer Meat Loaf at the theater. Musically and personally, they understood each other and began working on a record full of monumental rock ballads Bat Out of Hell, which was released in 1977 and gradually became a big hit.

In the 1980s, however, their relationship was rather cold. At the time, Steinman worked for Barbara Streisand, Sisters of Mercy and Bonnie Tyler, who wrote, among other things, the timeless megahit Total Eclipse of the Heart.

He also had his own band Pandora’s Box, with which he released the now-forgotten album Original Sin.

In the 1990s, they reunited with Meat Loaf and released Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell with the hit I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That). Falling Into You with Celine Dion was also a great commercial success.

The composer also participated in musicals such as Whistle Down the Wind and especially Tanz der Vampire, which premiered in Austria in 1997. Since 2017, he has performed in the Czech Republic as the Ball of Vampires with Czech lyrics by Michael Prostějovský.
