A player from a local league in Argentina was arrested and sentenced to life in prison after assaulting a female referee during a match on Sunday (31/7).
Cristian Tirone of third division club Deportivo Garmense was arrested on the pitch after hitting referee Dalma Cortadi in the back of the neck. The club also imposed a life ban.
What happened?
The attack occurred during a match between Club Deportivo Independencia and Deportivo Garmense in local league Tres Arroyos in the province of Buenos Aires.
In the aftermath of the incident, the match was immediately stopped and, in addition to giving Tirone a life sentence, Deportivo Garmense also condemned the violence.
The referee took legal action
Monday (1/8), referee Cortadi took legal action because he did not accept the player’s violent actions against him.
“I fell after being hit and I don’t remember anything else. When I woke up I felt dizzy and felt like throwing up. This kind of thing can’t happen again,” Cortadi, who had to be rushed to the hospital, told Active Radio 97.9.
The issue of gender is not an issue here. It did happen to me as a woman, however [kekerasan] It happens to men too.”
What did the Argentine federation say?
The Argentine Football Federation (AFA) released a statement regarding the shameful act: “The AFA opposes and condemns the actions of the player Cristian Tirone (Dep. Garmense) against referee Dalma Cortadi, who was the victim of physical violence.”
“We will be submitting the case to the Disciplinary Committee for them to apply appropriate sanctions to the player and to ensure that this deviant event will not be repeated in any other stadium in our football league.”
