Senior Minister of State for Health Janil Puthucheary said the crisis occurred as more and more health workers resigned.

Quoted from the page CNA, about 1,500 health workers were out of work just in mid-2021, compared to about 2,000 per year before the pandemic.

Foreign health workers have also resigned in greater numbers. Nearly 500 foreign doctors and nurses resigned during the first half of 2021. That’s more than around 500 health workers in 2020 and around 600 in 2019.

The resignations were mostly submitted for personal reasons, for migration, or moving back to their home countries.

Janil cited a message he received from a senior member of the clinical team describing the condition of overworked and tired health workers.

The health workers felt they were ‘running a marathon’ that would never end due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “Therefore, it is not surprising that the resignation rate has increased this year,” explained Janil.

He also revealed that most health workers have not been able to take leave since 2020. In addition, more than 90 percent were unable to take their leave this year as well.

“This proportion is higher than in the last two years. Our healthcare workers have gone beyond the call of duty to treat their patients,” Janil added.

According to him, the hospital has been trying not to have many staff members working overtime. During last September, the number of nurses working an average of 160 to 175 hours per month.
