Austria begins to enforce lockdown and became the first country in western Europe to take drastic steps against the fourth wave of COVID-19. Just like the previous lockdown, only this time it was done when there was a vaccine.
During lockdown, crowded places such as bars, restaurants, cafes, barber shops, cinemas and non-essential shops may not open within the next 10 days and may be extended to 20 days.
The Christmas market, which had just opened, was also not spared from the lockdown, and had to close. Hotels are not allowed to accept new tourists after the lockdown is enforced.
“This is a situation when we have to react now,” Health Minister Wolfgang Mueckstein told ORF TV.
“Lockdown, a relatively harsh method, the sledgehammer, is the only way to reduce the infection rate here,” he explained.
Last week, Austria implemented lockdown especially for those who have not been vaccinated. However, as the infection rate has not decreased, the lockdown has now been extended to all.
