COVID-19 cases in Singapore soared again. On Tuesday (7/9/2021), the country reported the highest daily cases of Corona in the past year, namely 328 cases.
As is known, Singapore is one of the leading countries that want to live a life of ‘peace with COVID-19’. However, until now Singapore is still facing a spike in cases COVID-19.
Quoted from Channel News Asia, Deputy Chair of the Multi-ministerial Task Force on COVID-19, Gan Kim Yong, said that Singapore would lift almost all social restrictions once the country had entered the endemic phase.
The COVID-19 endemic can be realized if a large part of the population has been vaccinated and the rate of transmission corona virus already low. Meanwhile, vaccination coverage in Singapore is already very high, which is above 80 percent.
On August 10, Singapore began easing restrictions. Various activities, from holding gatherings of up to 5 people to dining in, are permitted by the local government.
This easing policy is referred to as the preparatory phase. Unfortunately, this stage was only able to last for almost a month, as COVID-19 cases in Singapore jumped again.
“At that time, we can continue to keep the number of severe cases under control, and our treatment capacity under control,” said Health Minister Ong Ye Kung.
On September 3, the Chair of the Multi-ministerial COVID-19 Task Force, Lawrence Wong, confirmed that Singapore would not enter the next easing phase for now, as the transmission of the Corona virus was high again.
“We do not intend to make any new opening steps at this time, as there is a time lag between the onset of serious disease infections, so we would like to take the time to monitor the situation,” explained Wong.
However, Wong said that strict restrictions will also not be carried out again, because the COVID-19 vaccination rate in Singapore is already high.
“In fact, we will only be tightening again as a last resort to prevent our hospital system from being overwhelmed,” Wong said.
