A public surveillance camera captured the moment when the Hispanic woman had partially crossed the street, waiting for the rest of the path to clear to move forward. But in the blink of an eye, a white Jeep truck fatally hit her.
The blow was so strong that Lourdes’ body reached another truck, a green Jeep Wrangler, which could not avoid running over her as well.
The driver of the second vehicle stayed at the scene and cooperated with authorities, but the driver of the white van fled the scene and is still wanted by the NYPD.
The Dominican woman was just a few meters from her building and had gone out to shop at a warehouse.
“I want my daughter’s murderer to appear,” mother of the woman who was run over
Our reporter Alejandro Condis, from Univision 41, spoke with relatives of the victim, when they were making preparations for an unexpected wake.
Lourdes de León, the victim’s mother, expressed that she only wants the driver of the white van, whom she called a “murderer,” to appear.
“It’s not fair, they ruined her, maybe we won’t even be able to see her. She wasn’t a dog to be beaten like that,” said the heartbroken mother. “She didn’t deserve to die like this,” she added.
The authorities still do not know if the driver of the white van is a man or a woman, and although he had the green light at the time of the deadly hit, it is a crime not to have remained at the scene.
“You can explain to the police that you didn’t see her, that it was an accident, but when you leave, it’s as if you had shot her,” declared José Camilo, Lourdes’ father.
Not having the papers in order, driving at excessive speed or being under the influence of some substance are some of the reasons given by the victim’s family for the person responsible to have made the decision to flee.
A taxi driver who was at the traffic light was the one who called 911
Jorge Barrios, taxi driver and witness to the death of Lourdes Camilo, told Univision 41 that he saw the woman fly through the air and fall to the asphalt.
He was at the traffic light, waiting for the green light, and after seeing the terrible accident, he got out of the car and crossed trash cans in the street, so that the victim’s body would not be run over again. He also called 911.
“I haven’t been able to sleep since Saturday, it was an experience I had never had before,” said Barrios, due to the fact that he had seen the horrible condition of the Dominican woman’s body.
According to figures managed by the New York Police Department (NYPD), 47 drivers fled after hitting a person in 2023, with 6 being arrested.
