Hit and Run: BMW Driver Flees After Hitting Five Young People in Santander

Five young people leaving a party were hit by a high-end vehicle when they were walking along a road in Santander on the night of Sunday, February 11.

The events were recorded on the cold river path of Girón. As can be seen in a video that appeared on social networks, the five people were calmly traveling along an uncovered road when a BMW car, with plates DKW888 from Bucaramanga, approached at high speed to where they were staying.

When they realized that the vehicle was already coming, the young people pulled over to the side of the road. However, the driver of the car decided to increase the speed, direct the car towards where they were staying and hit the five people.

Far from stopping to provide any help, the aggressor decided to continue on his way, while two of the affected young people tried, by their own means, to provide help to their loved ones who remained injured.

According to the authorities, the victims were transported by ambulance to nearby healthcare centers once the agencies in charge were alerted about what happened. In addition, the driver of the vehicle had fled the scene by the time members of the public force arrived.

The Secretary of Transit and Transportation of Girón, Juan José Gómez, indicated that two of those affected, who are between 18 and 23 years old, had to undergo surgery and remain with a reserved prognosis.

Likewise, the official acknowledged that the authorities considered the possibility that the events represented an accident at the beginning, however, after analyzing the videos of what happened, the agencies in charge ruled that the incident was caused intentionally.

And, according to investigators of the case, the driver of the vehicle was involved in a heated argument with the victims of the accident in the middle of the party where they were staying minutes before what happened. In addition, the authorities were able to verify that the car did not have valid Soat.

The driver has already been fully identified by the authorities and the vehicle was found in a parking lot in Floridablanca hours after what happened. For his part, the mayor of Girón, Campo Elías Ramírez, condemned the events in the middle of a media appearance on the morning of Tuesday, February 13, 2024.

“It causes me pain as a citizen, we cannot continue allowing these acts of intolerance. “I ask the Attorney General’s Office to fully investigate both the driver of the vehicle that left five people seriously injured and the establishments in the sector where the events occurred,” he assured.

It should be noted that in the event that the prosecuting entity finds said accident to be intentional, the driver of the vehicle could be charged with attempted homicide.

It is also valid to note that between 2021 and 2022, Santander was one of the departments with the highest number of people killed in road accidents. In that region of the country, authorities reported more than 800 fatalities in that period.

Even in the first half of 2023, that sector of the national territory witnessed the death of 187 people who were involved in traffic accidents. For this reason, the Ministry of Transportation warned at the time that Santander registered a 2.2% increase in deaths due to road accidents.

The government entity indicated on that occasion that Bucaramanga and Cartagena accounted for 35.3% of the deaths reported in episodes of this nature.
