SPACE — Astronomers have long suspected Uranus has rings. However, they have not been able to prove it with certainty.
Until March 10, 1977, astronomers discovered rings around Uranus. The discovery that confirmed that the planets in the solar system have rings actually happened by accident.

A team of three astronomers used NASA’s Kuiper Airborne Observatory to observe Uranus’s atmosphere. They do this during a stellar occultation, which means a star is passing behind the seventh planet.
Seeing how the light from the star changes as it passes through Uranus’s atmosphere can yield clues about its composition. To their surprise, the star had started to twinkle even before it was blocked by Uranus.
The star disappears and reappears five times as it passes behind Uranus’ rings. Initially, scientists believed that Uranus had five rings, but further observations revealed that it only had 13. Source: Space.com
