History today: Apollo 8 returns to Earth

The first manned mission to the moon, Apollo 8 returned safely to Earth.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, NEW YORK – On December 27, the first manned mission to the moon, Apollo 8, returned safely to Earth. The spacecraft went through a historic journey for six days.

Reported HistoryOn Tuesday (12/27/2022), beginning December 21, Apollo 8 was launched by a three-stage Saturn 5 rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida. The mission carried astronauts Frank Borman, James Lovell, Jr. and William.

On Christmas Eve, astronauts enter orbit around the moon. It will be the first manned spacecraft to do so.

During Apollo 8’s 10 lunar orbits, television images were fed back and spectacular photos of the Earth and the Moon were taken from the spacecraft. In addition to being the first humans to directly see their home world in its entirety, the three astronauts were also the first to see the far side of the moon.

On Christmas morning, Apollo 8 left its lunar orbit and began its journey back to Earth. Apollo 8 finally landed safely in the Pacific Ocean on December 27. On July 20 of the following year, Apollo 11 astronauts Neil A. Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the moon.
