LID
The illustrious history of Veronica begins in 1960, as ‘Radio Veronica’, the first Dutch pirate channel. DJs such as Rob Out, Lex Harding and Tineke de Nooij play pop music from the North Sea, something that many broadcasters have not yet done. It will be a resounding success, especially among young people with transistor radios. The fact that the channel had to stop in 1974 due to the anti-pirate law is a big disappointment for many people. Two years later, Veronica struck back: after a major membership recruitment drive, it continued as a public broadcaster, which in the 1980s would even grow into the largest public broadcaster in the public system, with more than one and a half million members.
