History of Vannes: the timber frame of the Hôtel de Montigny unearthed during its reconstruction

If you do your shopping within the walls of Vannes (Morbihan), you have probably noticed this half-timbered house. The historian and elected François tells us about it.

Reconstruction in the 18th century

The Hôtel de Montigny is located on rue Noé. “The current building was built in the first half of the 18th century on the site of an older building dating back to 15th century.

Until then, it was not possible to see the piece of wood that was coated”, reveals François.

” He adds :

In the courtyard, the entrance to which is on the side, one can see the vaulted stables surmounted by two square floors. It is interesting to note that when this private mansion was rebuilt in the 18th century, stone was partly used on a building which was originally mostly made of wood. A noticeable evolution in the use of various construction materials.

The historian invites us to look at the symmetry of this private mansion which takes up a “relatively narrow medieval plot.
