History of the construction of St. Peter’s Basilica from the 4th century
The history of St. Peter’s Basilica dates back to the 4th century when the emperor Constantine decided to build a basilica where the apostle was buried. In 329 the construction of the basilica was completed. Then in 1506 Julius II began the construction of a new basilica to replace the existing one, commissioning the architect Donato Bramante.
Upon Bramante’s death in 1514, the works passed to Raffaello Sanzio and various proposals were discussed until 1521. Raffaello died in 1520 and construction continued to Antonio da Sangallo, who in 1538 completed his project for the basilica.
After the death of Antonio da Sangallo in 1546, the construction was continued by Michelangelo Buonarroti. The construction of St. Peter’s Basilica was completed twenty-four years after his death by Domingo Fontana and Jacobo della Porta.
Furthermore, Pope Paul V decided to extend the church building towards the front. Since Maderno’s death in 1629, Bernini is responsible for the interior decoration of the entire church of St. Peter’s Basilica, which has given it its current appearance.

As previously reported, one of the former Vatican popes, Pope Benedict XVI, died on Saturday, December 31, 2022, local time, at his residence in the Vatican. Pope Benedict XVI has died at the age of 95.
The funeral of Pope Benedict XVI will be held on Thursday 5 January 2023 and will be presided over by Pope Francis. Pope Benedict XVI will be buried in the papal tomb below Basilica of Saint Peter or Basilica of Saint Peterin the Vatican.
“The funeral is scheduled for Thursday January 5, at 9:30 local time in St. Peter’s Square, presided over by the Holy Father,” said Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni as reported by AFP, Saturday (12/31/2022).
