History – 1939, the special Christmas of Polish airmen in the Mining Basin

This is the story of 350 Polish airmen. It is 1939, Christmas is approaching and winter this year is terrible. They won’t be seeing Poland again anytime soon.

Christmas in Poland, more than anywhere else, is a very important time. The airmen are exiled in Bron. Their country was invaded by Germany. So to boost the morale of the troops, Stanislaw Rychlik, the regional president of the liaison committee of Polish associations submits an idea, send the airmen to celebrate Christmas in families of the mining basin. They will disembark at Montceau station on Christmas Eve.

This story is Gérard Soufflet who tells us about it. He is also the author with Jérémy Beurier of “A new history of the Resistance, the Téméraires, Cities and maquis in Montceau-les-Mines before May 1944”.

Here are some excerpts.
