In an unprecedented way, several Russian cities located in the Arctic reached 38 degrees Celsius, during a heat wave that is affecting Siberia.
Siberia: A region of extremes
The city of Verkhoyansk, one of the smallest in Russia, is known for its incredibly low temperatures. In winter, it reaches -50 ° C. In fact, in 1892, the city registered an impressive -67.8 ° C.
This year, the story was different and experts are already eyeing this phenomenon. For the first time, since the date of the first records, in the 1880s, 38 ° C was felt last Saturday [22].
According to the authorities, the temperatures recorded in Verkhoyansk are due to an eastern anticyclone. In addition, the meteorological service of the Republic of Sakha, home of the record-breaking city, recalled that, normally, that area of Siberia registers high temperatures in July, not in June, as it happened.
