Historical temperatures in Siberia worry meteorologists

Before the pandemic filled all the covers of newspapers and became a topic all over the world, the theme that was present was global warming and the alternatives available to combat it. Still in a lack of definition, we see the subject of the environment returning to the fore and, apparently, the situation remains serious…

In an unprecedented way, several Russian cities located in the Arctic reached 38 degrees Celsius, during a heat wave that is affecting Siberia.

Siberia: A region of extremes

The city of Verkhoyansk, one of the smallest in Russia, is known for its incredibly low temperatures. In winter, it reaches -50 ° C. In fact, in 1892, the city registered an impressive -67.8 ° C.

This year, the story was different and experts are already eyeing this phenomenon. For the first time, since the date of the first records, in the 1880s, 38 ° C was felt last Saturday [22].

According to the authorities, the temperatures recorded in Verkhoyansk are due to an eastern anticyclone. In addition, the meteorological service of the Republic of Sakha, home of the record-breaking city, recalled that, normally, that area of Siberia registers high temperatures in July, not in June, as it happened.

Phenomenon worries experts

The temperatures recorded last Saturday are worrisome, from the experts' point of view. This is because also on Sunday there was a temperature of 35.2 ° C. In fact, the Copernicus Climate Change Monitoring Service, I had already said that in March, April and May the average temperature was 10 degrees Celsius above normal.

Alongside this, there are already several studies that have been carried out that explain that the Arctic may be warming twice as fast as expected. Thus, all studies, combined with effective changes, are of concern to specialists.

This heat wave hit other areas of the Arctic Circle, registering about 45 ° C. In addition, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has already revealed that the Arctic is one of the regions most affected by global warming, reducing the volume of sea ice and breaking temperature records.

That said, WMO announced last Tuesday that it is investigating the temperatures felt in Siberia, for their gravity and for what they mean in the context of climate change, around the world.
