Jakarta

Batavia Castle which is buried as deep as 1.5 to 2 meters on Jalan Tongkol, Pademangan, North Jakarta (Jakut), discovered by archaeologists University of Indonesia (UI). A number of other historical objects were found from the pile of remains Kastel Batavia which was built hundreds of centuries ago.

UI archaeologists often come to Batavia Castle to carry out excavations. The location of the excavation turned out to be land for parking trucks for transporting goods. In addition, there are plastic ball industrial houses and logistics services.

“Actually, it’s been quite a while, especially since archaeologists often come here. Behind this there is also a castle too, it’s also a former history,” said Head of RT 08 RW 1, Suwanto when met at the location, Saturday (29/5/ 2021).

The excavation point of the Batavia Castle has been closed because the UI archaeologist’s research project has been completed. Visible excavated stretches of about 3 meters. At this excavation point, said Suwanto, the walls of the Batavia Castle made of bricks were still neatly arranged.

“Oh yes (here is the castle), it has a neat brick arrangement, I think maybe because of the subsidence in Jakarta, it has been buried for a long time, it’s still in good shape when I look at it. I’m even proud that Indonesia can open it up The land is a place for tourists,” he said.

There is information that the land will be built for flats. UI archaeologists, who often visit the excavation site, have asked Batavia Castle not to hit the earth spikes because it could be destroyed.

“So the archaeologists want to check that the castle doesn’t hit the earth spikes, that’s most likely. So they dug it up, he also has an archive. After opening it, it turned out that the castles were still there, the Dutch era castles, it was around 20, according to estimates. The University of Indonesia itself with its dean and lecturers went there, that was around the 1600s,” he said.

“Actually, this matter did not have time to be explored because they wanted to build flats, if I’m not mistaken, in 2022, they will start building flats,” he added

Another find from the Batavia Castle is the fragments of historic ceramics. The ceramic shards, said Suwanto, came from China, the Netherlands and England.

From the photo received, the ceramic shards are white with dark blue motifs. There is also a fragment of a white jar that reads ‘Japansch’.

Then, the next finding is a yellow brick that is thought to have come from Europe. The yellow brick was immediately found by Suwanto while exploring the excavation site.

“Then what I showed earlier was the yellow brick. The yellow brick is information that I know it is made in Europe, because the soil is yellow, I don’t know, but it is from Europe. From here, (Europeans) said they brought spices, it was empty there , load the bricks. The bricks were eventually used to build the area around the Sunda Kelapa Harbor and its surroundings, “he explained.
