Historical economic recovery, level last year still a long way off

The Dutch economy rebounded in the third quarter. In July, August and September, gross domestic product (GDP) increased by 7.7 percent from the three months before. That is the largest growth ever measured, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands.

The Netherlands therefore emerged from a deep recession. The level of last year is also not yet in the picture: compared to the fourth quarter of 2019, the Dutch economy has still contracted by 3 percent.

The fact that things went better in the summer was partly the result of more consumption by households. The terraces were filled and the doors of closed museums, shops and cinemas reopened. As a result, households spent more than 9 percent more than in the preceding months.

Government consumption also increased sharply, as did corporate investments and exports.

United Kingdom is emerging from a deep valley

The economy also picked up again in other European countries. The United Kingdom had plummeted in the spring. In the second quarter, the economy there shrank by almost a fifth. GDP grew by ample again in July, August and September 15 percent compared to the previous quarter.

Compared to last year, the value of the services and products produced in the United Kingdom is still almost ten percent lower. In addition, growth slowed again in September.

The German economy is also not over the corona blow. GDP is still ample there 4 percent stock than last year, despite a recovery of more than 8 percent in July, August and September.

Jobs are coming back

Earlier today, CBS made 164,000 jobs return between June and October. Due to the corona crisis, almost 300,000 jobs had been lost in the three months before.

Many jobs were added in healthcare in the third quarter. At temporary employment agencies, the number of jobs increased only marginally, while in that sector a lot of jobs had been lost in the preceding quarter.
