Madrid. The Colombia Humana party, the political party of Colombian President Gustavo Petro, held its second assembly in Bogotá on Sunday and agreed to join a new political project in the form of a party with the name of the coalition that brought Petro to the presidency, Pacto Histórico.
The new party will bring together in a single proposal the formations that supported Petro with a view to the elections to Congress and the Presidency in 2026.
Petro himself participated in the event and advocated for “the unity of the entire Colombian left,” although he acknowledged that there are “some divisions.”
“Political projects are a means to achieve change, to achieve power for the people. Today we are losing our vitality and time in history in fights among ourselves. That is not justified,” he said, according to Colombian public television, RTVC.
Petro has mentioned the “egolatries” that have historically prevented the left from building a serious political project and has warned that if they occur in the Historic Pact, he would withdraw from it.
The Colombian leader has highlighted the “historic opportunity” that is presented to “make social changes” and has warned that if he fails and the right returns to power, “history will not forgive him.”
“If they return to power, they will bathe Colombia in blood. We already know that, we know how they act in the regions, we know who they deal with, we know what weapons they use. We have denounced it time and again. They have no other form of control over the people than fear and terror because they are full of mafia and drug trafficking,” he argued.
