For the first time in Portugal, a referee communicated, in real time, in a stadium, a decision made using VAR.
In the second half of Lank Vilaverdense-Santa Clara, João Pedro Afonso showed a yellow card for simulation to Gonçalo Teixeira, after the hosts’ forward fell in the area, following a shared play with Sema Velásquez.
Alerted by the VAR, the referee went to the monitor to review the play, went to the center of the field and announced the final decision. «After VAR review, defender no. 6 kicks striker no. 7 in the heel. Final decision: remove the yellow card from number 7 and award a penalty”, said João Pedro Afonso, before pointing to the penalty spot.

This system, it should be noted, has already been present in other Portuguese football games, but has only now been used.
